Blogs and Magazines with WordPress

Often when mentioning open-source, WordPress is what comes to mind. WordPress has started in 2003 and was originally designed for blog management. Over the years the system’s popularity grew and it began being used for many other purposes as well.

Being an agency that relies mainly on open source solutions such as MODx and Prestashop we can’t ignore the fact that some projects are simply perfect for WordPress.

Why we use WordPress

While some companies and developers rely on WordPress as an all purpose CMS. We tend to use WordPress in specific cases:

  • For blogs, the original purpose of WordPress is still one of the best reasons for using it. WordPress is great for blogs since it allows easy content management for posts, links, comments etc.
  • For online magazines, much like blogs, magazines require the same type of content management but with more robust capabilities such as handling large amounts of content, traffic, and requires support for publishers, editors etc.
  • For community features, such as comments, user accounts and content moderation.
  • For flexibility, in most systems, some requirements often demand custom development. With over 12,200 plug-ins, both commercial and free, WordPress often covers most requirements any project could have.

Summarizing the advantages of WordPress is the fact that WordPress.org is one of the top ten high-traffic websites in the world, it’s the choice of many fortune 500 companies and it’s practically the symbol of the web’s open-source community.
